Le Panier Mystérieux, 1748

Oil on canvas, 36¼ x 30 inches (92 x 79 cm)

Signed and dated 1748

Le Panier Mystérieux is a delightful example of Boucher’s pastoral manner favoured by Madame de Pompadour and the court of Louis XV. The elegant artificiality of the convention portrays shepherds and shepherdesses, rather too clean and fashionably dressed to be genuine rustics, who were probably marquises and their lovers in disguise. The genre follows the fashion for pastoral eclogue widely practised by eighteenth-century French poets, but with his particular artistic gifts Boucher made it into his own personal creation. Fluent and crisp in execution, the present painting has all the virtues of Boucher’s mature style.
