A Vase of Roses in a Window, c. 1618-19

Oil on copper, 11 x 9 inches (28 x 23 cm)

Signed with the artist’s monogram at lower right.

Exhibited: Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, “The Dawn of the Golden Age”, 11th December 1993 – 6th March 1994. No. 279

This flower piece is one of six paintings by Bosschaert with an open-air background, and was doubtless executed towards the end of the second decade of the 17th century, when Bosschaert was working in Breda. In all the others a distant landscape is visible, all but one seen through a window embrasure. Two of them are closely related variants of the painting shown here.
