This is a theme, which recurs from time to time in Picasso’s work, and notably in 1953 when there are several versions, painted at Vallauris. The sitter is Françoise Gilot, shortly to leave Picasso to return with the children to Paris. The “double image” of the sitter’s face, seen both frontally and in profile, is typical of the artist’s portraits at this time.
