In Einander, 1928

Gouache, watercolour and pen and ink on paper, 48.5 by 32cm.

The art world has come to appreciate increasingly the importance of Kandinsky as the father of non-figurative art; and his works have shown an impressive rise in value. His earliest abstract pictures, painted in Munich before 1914, are strongly Expressionist in character. It was not until the 1920s, during which he was a professor at the Bauhaus, that he arrived at his more geometric style. The watercolour In Einander, illustrated here, was painted in 1928, and comes from the collection of Nina Kadinsky, the artist’s widow.
